The long awaited gear haul!





 I have been waiting to a gear haul ever since the fist package came in :) What a great excuse to go shopping?! It was fun laying everything out, but also very helpful when trying to pack most efficiently and tracking what I’ve brought. This is actually a crazy amount of gear but all are unfortunately, super necessary when trying to follow the packing guide to a T. I stepped on the scale with all of this stuff and it came out to ~68lbs!! I’m going to have a super time lugging all this around the jungle for 6 weeks. Yay! Shout out the thrift/facebook market place for providing me with some unique things. I’m hoping that this can also serve as a guide for those who come after me in similar positions. I have only really been camping once so all of this gear is new to me so I hope I might save some people hours of research :) 

Even though these were big purchases, I’m looking forward to using these on future backpacking adventures. Could this be the beginning of my camping era?? Also, I’d like to thank my parents immensely for making this possible and helping me through this very long process. Thank you and I love you very much!

      One of our two finals for this program was to write an option piece, similar to those seen in magazines. I drew on the six weeks of experiences and focused on what stook out to me the most and emerged as a new passion, out relationship with food.      It took me a bit to finalize it to be blog worthy since I hand wrote my original final and typed up most of the draft on my phone.  I really enjoyed looking deeper into this topic and found so many interconnecting strings. Wow, only counting days now until the program is over!

These 6 weeks have been very physically and mentally demanding and seemed to have gone on forever but has also weirdly gone by so fast. So much has been accomplished and learned over this time and even though I am looking forward to coming home, this was still an unforgettable experience that I’m glad I took a chance on going on. Now these final days are mainly for completing final research projects, essays, field journals, and a final exam.  However, we are still learning even though our days are counting down. Our group toured Finca Köbö which is a mixture of cacao plantations and primary and secondary regenerated forest. We learned how they use intercropping/ permaculture practices to increase biodiversity within the cacao plantations. They also grow a large stock of vanilla bean, which grow on large vines in structures similar to vineyards. I had the honor of manually pollinating the rare vanilla orchid.
